A week into our planned micro/suburban homestead and we’ve got lots of changes around our little abode. First, we had our neighbor’s bitter melon herbs coming under the fence. Since we figured it would keep coming – and hey, free herbs! – we installed a lattice-type rail along our fence for our herbal friend to climb up and around.
We planted hardware-store-bought tomatoes, bok choy, mint, and green peppers, and a resilient green onion plant peeling out.

We currently have two peat pellet broods going – one of herbs and one of yellow bell peppers, since I chopped one up for dinner and saved the seeds. Our herb is a trial run with the peat pellets and transplanting them to our planter box, so we tried a random assortment of cilantro, lettuce, and basil seeds.

We have a rosemary plant growing in a jar in the kitchen, and our first few plants are growing beautifully. Our biggest apple banana tree is almost ripe, with a second cropping up just behind it. Our little lemon tree has its first full, juicy looking lemon with plenty of babies coming along. Our orange plant, always taking its time to grow, is still taking its damn time. lol.
We also started day 1 of our very first gluten free sourdough starter – or any dough, honestly. Expectations are low, but hopes are still hopeful.

We’re also working around how to maximize our gardening space, and dreaming about its potential. We’re imaging a vertical’s gardening arch stretching above our baby tomato plant, more lattice covered with lilikoi, a square planter box in a spare corner of the yard for potatoes, and a vertical herb garden below the kitchen window.
We will continue working towards our ultimate goal of fighting the power by feeding ourselves. Peace✌🏼
